Abu Dhabi has taken a significant step towards becoming more pet-friendly by allowing cats and dogs in certain restaurants and hotels, following an update to local regulations. The new rule applies to outlets holding tourism licences and permits pets only in designated areas, subject to strict health, safety and hygiene standards.
The move has been welcomed by many pet parents who say it reflects a changing lifestyle in the UAE capital. However, the decision has also sparked debate, with some restaurant owners and animal behaviour experts urging caution over how the policy will work in practice.
Under the updated guidelines, restaurants and hotels can allow pets such as cats and dogs in outdoor or clearly separated areas, as long as they comply with approved safety measures.
