Abu Dhabi announced new Pet-Friendly Travel Policy

In a move welcomed by animal lovers, Abu Dhabi authorities have introduced a new travel policy to make tourism more pet friendly in the UAE. The updated guidelines allow hotels and eateries with the right licences to welcome visitors who bring their cats or dogs along. Until now, pets were mostly not allowed in public hospitality spaces unless they were certified service animals.

Under the new policy, each hotel or restaurant will decide if it wants to open its doors to pet owners and their four-legged companions. The idea is to provide dedicated areas for animals, often outdoors like garden terrace or patio sections, where owners can relax while their pets are close by. Some venues may even organise indoor pet-friendly spots as long as they follow health and safety guidelines.

Officials behind the policy say the change comes from seeing more people around the world planning trips with their pets. Travellers want the freedom to go sightseeing, dine out and stay in comfort without leaving their pets behind. By encouraging tourism spots to cater to this trend, Abu Dhabi hopes to attract a wider range of visitors.

Although the decision doesn’t force hotels or restaurants to become pet friendly, it does open the door for many to do so. Hospitality businesses that join in may gain an edge with pet-loving guests, and could see more booking from families or tourists who treat their animals like part of their family.

This policy builds on earlier examples in the emirate where some hotels already allowed animals under specific conditions. With the new framework, more venues are expected to follow suit, making it easier for residents and visitors alike to enjoy a meal or stay with their pets at their side.

Travel experts say that offering pet-friendly tourism options puts Abu Dhabi in line with a broader global trend. Many destinations worldwide are updating services to meet the rising demand from travellers who do not want to be separated from their pets during trips.
