Virgin Australia has confirmed that pets will soon be allowed to travel with their owners on domestic flights. The new service is set to begin from 16th October 2025 and some pet parents will be allowed to take their pets on Virgin flights between Melbourne and Queensland.
The airlines said the program will start with small animals, such as cats and dogs. Details on which pets will be accepted, how the booking system will work, and the cost involved will be announced closer to the launch.
Virgin Australia explained that the decision comes after strong demand from pet owners who want easier travel options for their animals. Currently, pets must travel in the cargo hold, but the new policy will allow them to stay closer to their families during the journey.
The airline also confirmed that safety and comfort will remain a priority. Pets will need to meet certain health and size requirements, and only approved carriers will be allowed in the cabin. More guidelines are expected soon from Virgin Australia and Australia’s aviation authorities.
Industry experts believe this move will bring Virgin Australia in line with global airlines that already allow pets in the cabin, such as major carriers in the US and Europe. Pet owners are likely to welcome this change, as it reduces stress for both animals and their families. The decision could also encourage more people to travel within Australia, boosting domestic tourism.
This step highlights a growing trend of airlines adapting to the needs of modern travelers, where pets are increasingly seen as family members rather than cargo.
