IATA Releases New In-Cabin Pet Travel Guidelines

Pet owners planning on flying with pets from the UAE may soon benefit from a more consistent travel experience. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released new operational guidance that encourages airlines to standardise their airline pet policies for pets travelling in aircraft cabins. While the guidance is voluntary, it aims to improve cabin pet travel by helping airlines adopt clearer procedures from booking through arrival.

As pet travel in the UAE continues to grow, many travellers face different rules depending on the airline they choose. IATA's recommendations are designed to reduce this confusion by promoting consistent practices that prioritise animal welfare, passenger safety and smoother airline operations. The guidance covers key stages of the journey, including booking, check-in, boarding, the onboard experience and arrival.

The recommendations also encourage airlines to define clear eligibility criteria for pets travelling in the cabin, establish transparent pet carrier requirements and train staff to handle pet travel more consistently. Rather than relying on blanket restrictions, airlines are advised to use a risk-based approach when assessing cabin pet travel.

For those planning international pet relocation from the UAE, it's important to remember that these are guidelines, not mandatory rules. Individual airlines will continue to decide whether pets are allowed in the cabin, along with size limits, approved carriers and documentation requirements. Travellers should therefore check their airline's latest policy before booking.

Although the guidance does not immediately change existing airline policies, it marks a positive step for pet travel from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other UAE airports. As more airlines adopt these recommendations, pet owners could enjoy a more predictable and seamless travel experience. For complex journeys, working with a trusted pet relocation company in the UAE can also help ensure all travel requirements are met before departure.
