Dog owners in the United States have a new option for protecting their pets from fleas and ticks: the FDA has just approved Bravecto Quantum, a groundbreaking injection that provides up to one year of protection with a single dose.
While this treatment is currently approved only in the US, the news is generating interest among pet owners worldwide (including here in the UAE) who are always on the lookout for more convenient and effective ways to keep their dogs safe from parasites.
Bravecto Quantum is designed for dogs and puppies aged six months and older. Instead of the monthly or quarterly treatments many owners are familiar with, this new shot could make parasite prevention much simpler.
"Fluralaner, the active ingredient in Bravecto Quantum, can be an important part of parasite control depending on where pet owners live in the country," said Dr. Tina Wismer, senior director of toxicology at ASPCA Poison Control, in an email to ABC News. "A long-term flea and tick preventative can be a useful option for dog owners who live in areas where year-round protection is necessary, or for those who might not be able or remember to administer treatment on a monthly or quarterly basis."
The injection must be given by a licensed veterinarian, who will determine whether your dog needs 8 or 12 months of protection based on local tick risks and will monitor for any side effects after the shot. The active ingredient, fluralaner, is generally considered safe but can rarely cause neurological side effects such as muscle tremors and seizures, even in dogs with no prior history. Other potential side effects include lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and itching, though most reactions are mild and short-lived.
Animal welfare advocates, like Julie Cappiello from Voters for Animal Rights, have welcomed the convenience of this new option, but urge pet owners and veterinarians to exercise caution and closely monitor dogs after administration, especially those with a history of seizures or neurological disorders.
"As someone who spends a great deal of time outdoors with my dog, I see the convenience of a long-lasting, 12-month flea and tick preventative like Bravecto Quantum," she said in a statement. "However, it's important to recognize that no single treatment is right for every dog, and all medications come with potential risks."
Bravecto Quantum is manufactured by Intervet, Inc., based in Rahway, New Jersey.
While Bravecto Quantum is not yet available in the UAE, this FDA approval is a promising sign of future advancements in pet care. For now, UAE’s pet parents should continue to consult their local veterinarians for the best available flea and tick prevention options. If you travel with your pet or are interested in new treatments as they become available, keep an eye on updates from UAE veterinary authorities and clinics.
As always, the best approach is to discuss your dog's specific needs with your vet, especially given the UAE’s warm climate, which can make year-round parasite protection important.
