A fire that broke out on the night of June 13 in Dubai Marina’s 67-storey Marina Pinnacle Tower, also known as Tiger Tower, triggered a swift and coordinated rescue effort not only for the thousands of residents, but also for the many pets left behind in the chaos.
As flames engulfed the upper floors, more than 3,800 residents were safely evacuated by Dubai Civil Defence teams, with many forced to make the difficult decision to leave their pets behind in the rush to escape. Some managed to carry animals with them, but for others, the separation was heart-wrenching.
While firefighters battled the blaze, a parallel mission unfolded. Dubai Police Search and Rescue, led by Captain Yaqoub Abdullah, responded to urgent calls from distraught pet owners and volunteers. Armed with detailed lists of trapped pets compiled by residents and animal advocates via WhatsApp groups, Captain Yaqoub and his team braved thick smoke, broken glass, and intense heat to search every apartment for animals. Over a 20-hour operation, they rescued cats, dogs, birds, and even small pets like tortoises and rabbits, reuniting many with their relieved owners
One resident, Ali Roozitalab, described the emotional moment when his golden retriever, Maya, was rescued after spending 27 hours alone in the smoke-filled apartment. “She’s alive, but hurt,” he recalled, expressing gratitude for the relentless efforts of the rescue team.
Outside the tower, the community mobilized rapidly. Veterinary clinics, including Mike’s Veterinary Clinic and Vets for Pets, opened their doors to provide free medical care, boarding, and foster arrangements for rescued animals, many of whom were suffering from smoke inhalation and stress. Clinic staff worked overtime, conducting thorough health checks and offering end-to-end care, while urging pet owners to microchip their animals for easier identification in future emergencies.
WhatsApp groups, some swelling to over 1,000 members, became lifelines for coordination, offering everything from emergency foster homes and transportation to meals and emotional support for both people and pets. Volunteers and strangers alike stepped in, ensuring that no animal was left without care or shelter.
Despite the extraordinary response, not every pet could be saved, and the loss was deeply felt by some residents. The tragedy has prompted calls for better preparedness, including proposals for emergency door stickers to alert first responders to the presence of pets in apartments; an idea that is quickly gaining traction among pet owners and advocates.
In the aftermath, as investigations continue and residents begin to rebuild, the events at Marina Pinnacle have become a testament to Dubai’s sense of community. The collective response, marked by bravery, generosity, and empathy, underscored a shared belief that, every family member deserves protection in times of crisis, whether on two legs or four.
“For many, pets are family. The effort must go beyond economic value,” said a spokesperson from Vets for Pets, echoing the sentiment that united the city in the face of adversity.
What began as a night of fear and uncertainty ultimately revealed the strength and compassion of Dubai’s residents; a reminder that the people and their care for the voiceless are what that truly define its spirit.
